If you are thinking of going to the South Rim of the canyon (where most people go), which pass through or near the city of Flagstaff (on I-40), which is about 90 minutes south of the canyon. Flagstaff has several excellent outdoor shops in the historic downtown area: Outdoor Outfitter and Peace Babbitt surplus (which despite the name is actually an outdoor shop seriously). Both of these places rent backpacking gear (tents, backpacks, sleeping bags). I've never rented from them myself, so I can not speak to quality but the stores themselves are fairly high-end personal and outdoor people who know his office. I note that there are two REI stores in the area of Las Vegas that will most likely rent a variety of arts (including backpackers train). In a note Side … if you are planning on doing a backpack in the canyon, be aware that you must have permits and reservations cruise these should be made at least 4 months before (sold quickly, especially during high season). They often have a few "walk-up permits can be at present Backcountry office when they open at 8am (the permits are for the next day), but can be unpredictable.
