Grape Dumplings

Juice ingredient

  • 1 qt. Grape Juice
  • 1 qt. Water
  • 2 Cups Sugar

Dumpling ingredients

  • 1⁄2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • 3 Cups Flour
  • 2 T. Lard
  • 1⁄4 tsp. Salt

Mix juices ingredients into Dutch oven and brings to a boil. Mix dumpling ingredients (in separate bowl). Add 1 Cup of warm juice to flour. Add salt, melted Shortening, and baking powder. Stir well till can handle with hands. Kneed and roll till thin. Cut into small squares. Drop into boiling juice. If juice seems to get thin after boiling first batch, put 2-3 T. of flour in a cup and 3 T. of cold water, stirring till smooth, and add to boiling dumplings. This is a traditional Cherokee recipe.
